Indian River Lagoon Greenway

The Indian River Land Trust has initiated planning for a greenway trail system along the Indian River Lagoon from south of the 17th Street Bridge to IRLT's 66-acre property behind McKee Botanical Garden. The project is focused on planning, development and management of a 2-3 mile Greenway along a series of private and public lands for walking, bicycling, viewing the lagoon and enjoying of our county's unique natural surroundings.

The project began in 2007 when IRLT staff first met with a citizens group to discuss the idea of the greenway along this part of the Indian River Lagoon. Discussions were also had with supportive county and state officials who own or manage various lands along the lagoon.

A Lagoon Greenway Plan was completed by IRLT in May 2009 and approved by the Board of County Commissioners in June 2009.

Update!
In fall 2010, the Lagoon Greenway was awarded a grant from the Florida Inland Navigation District matched by the County for Construction of the first phase of the Greenway. This phase includes an 11-car shell rock parking area nestled among a stand of mature oaks, a trailhead information kiosk, and a loop trail with a small picnic area. Construction of the project began in March 2011 and should be completed, and open to the public, by June. The Land Trust and the County recently applied for additional grants to construct the second phase of trails and boardwalks, which, if funded, should be completed by 2012.
